In this article, we will discuss how to resize huge-size images using the Imsanity plugin. This will help you to bring your images to a reasonable size to upload on your WordPress website.
We are using high-resolution cameras to capture the images. Even mobile phones come with high-resolution cameras. The images taken by these cameras are huge in size (e.g. 3000px X 1500px) and weight (e.g. 5MB). When it comes to using these images on a website, it is not easy. You can’t upload these huge images on your website. I wrote a separate post on how to reduce the weight of the images before uploading them on your website you can also call it image compression. In that post, I discussed some WordPress plugins for Image Compression. In this post, we will see how we can reduce the size of an image. You can try it in one of the following 3 ways:
- Resize a huge size image before uploading it to the website. There are several general tools available for this purpose. Even you can use MSPaint for it. Take care of the proportion of the height and width of the image else the image may squeeze or stretch.
- Using WordPress inbuilt image resizing feature. Yes, WordPress has an inbuilt image scaling feature. As soon as you upload an image to the WordPress website, depending on the size of the original image WordPress will create up to four smaller-sized copies of the file (Large, Medium-Large, Medium, Thumbnail). You can use any of these sizes on your page/post. You can also custom resize an image and use it. Though the original huge size images will sit right there using the space.
- Compared to the first way this method is quite straightforward and easy. There is a plugin available for resizing huge size images. This plugin will automatically reduce the huge size of the images to a more manageable size on the website. It can do it runtime as you upload the image. In the settings, you can set the image size to which you want the images to be resized. You can also bulk resize the already uploaded images.
Features of Imsanity Plugin:
- The best part is that it is one of its kind of plugin, no other such plugin is available yet.
- It automatically scales the large-size images to a size more suitable for your website.
- It will do the resizing during uploading itself using the pre-defined settings. You can set it up in the settings section.
- You can also bulk resize the images which are already there in your media library.
- It can convert BMP files to JPEG files. BMP files are not easy to scale but JPEGs are.
- If your site is selling or allowing free download of high-res images, you should avoid using this plugin
